Wind warning for

Bonavista Peninsula issued

Southwesterly gusts of up to 100 km/h will develop Sunday morning.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected in this region. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

An intense low pressure system currently south of Nova Scotia will continue to move northeastward to lie just south of Newfoundland this evening. This system will continue to deepen as it crosses Eastern Newfoundland overnight to lie northeast of the island by Sunday evening.

Rain at times heavy ahead of this system is forecast to develop early this evening in the southwest and spread to central and eastern regions by late this evening. Central and Eastern Newfoundland will see the majority of the rainfall with the Burin Peninsula expected to receive the highest accumulation of 50 millimetres overnight.

Additionally, strong easterly winds gusting up to 90 km/hour will develop this evening along parts of the south coast, Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas.

The heavy rain will subside by Sunday morning across most of the island, however, strong southwesterly winds with gusts up to 100 km/h will develop Sunday morning on the Bonavista Peninsula as the low tracks northeast of the island. On Sunday afternoon as the low continues to move northeastward, strong northwesterly winds are expected along the Northeast Coast and Northern Avalon with gusts up to 80 km/h. Winds are expected to diminish by midnight on Sunday.
